Member Profile: Ann Hill (Local 1101)
October 10, 2008
MAPE member Ann Hill, Local 1101, was an elected delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Denver.
Hill, ombudsperson for families, lives in South Minneapolis.
She was elected at the 5th Congressional District DFL
Convention.
Becoming a delegate the Democratic National Convention is very difficult. Out of more than 200,000 caucus attendees state-wide, only 72 elected delegates will be chosen to the attend the DNC.
Hill is a union steward for MAPE. She credits support from MAPE members in helping her to achieve her goal. “I want to thank the MAPE community that supported me in anyway they could, she said.”
Hill campaigned vigorously in the weeks leading up the convention. After being elected a delegate to the State and Congressional District Convention at the Senate District level, she attended numerous other conventions to meet her fellow delegates. She mailed a letter to all 240 delegates to the convention and called them personally to earn their support.
After getting elected, Hill had to think about how to pay
for the trip. “People supported me financially. MAPE members, folks in my
neighborhood were very generous. I just can’t thank everyone enough,” she
said.
Hill says the most memorable moment of the convention took place the very first night.
“The first night really set the tone. We were told Ted Kennedy was not going to be there. We thought he would be there via video. When he walked on stage, his energy and enthusiasm electrified the convention. You could feel the energy. He inspired us and set the tone for the rest of the convention,” she said.
Being there with the Minnesota Delegation was a particularly unique experience, she said. “We had a very interesting delegation. We had the youngest delegate in the country, a Vice President, two tribal chiefs, and two new Americans, immigrants from Somalia. We had a very diverse delegate. Nearly have the delegates from Minnesota were people of color. It was amazing to be a part of history.”
Now Hill is fired up to continue her work.
“I’ll never sit still again politically. For any local race, our state-wide races, our Congressional races. When I see candidates that I think can make a difference for ordinary Americans, I will do everything I can,” she said.
